What is the Rutgers Scarlet Page Service and where can I learn more about it?

The Rutgers Scarlet Page Service is a service provided by the Office of Information Technology and New Brunswick Computing Services to enhance system, software, and patch management for computer systems at the university. The service keeps track of what patches the system needs as well as any other changes may need to be made and notifies the appropriate parties of any problems.

Currently, the main focus is providing patch management via Windows Server Update Services. In addition, the program is working to provide system inventory scanning, centralized system administration, and integration with the Rutgers University Software Portal.

What are the security risks involved with Peer2Peer file sharing?

There are many security risks involved with Peer2Peer file sharing. File sharing involves using technology that allows internet users to share files that are housed on their individual computers. Peer-to-peer (P2P) applications, such as those used to share music files, are some of the most common forms of file-sharing technology. However, P2P applications introduce security risks that may put your information or your computer in jeopardy.

Some risks of using these programs include:

Installation of malicious code: It is nearly impossible to know whether P2P programs or the files they transmit are trustworthy. These applications often incorporate spyware, viruses, Trojan horses, or worms into the files.

What can I do to reduce my risk of identity theft?

Identity theft is a major problem that can often be prevented by making the right choices and protecting sensitive information. A person interested in committing identity theft often uses social engineering, or the process of using social interaction (often under false pretenses) to obtain personal or sensitive information from a victim. This means that someone relies on your trust to obtain information which compromises the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information to which you have access. Social engineering is a human vulnerability, and as such can be avoided by protecting your system and being aware that we are all responsible for security.

Can I install the Rutgers Scarlet Page Service at home or on my laptop?

The Rutgers Scarlet Page Service is not currently intended for home use. Systems using Scarlet Page will need a Rutgers IP address, usually obtained when using a computer in a Rutgers office, dormitory or other Rutgers location. Systems outside of Rutgers can obtain a Rutgers IP address by connecting to the Rutgers VPN, which will then allow the client to check in with the server for updates.

Although it is possible to connect to the service by using the Rutgers VPN, home use of Scarlet Page is strongly discouraged as future updates may require large amounts of bandwidth that may not be available outside of the campus network. Access via the VPN is provided mainly for traveling laptop users who usually access the internet in Rutgers locations, but would like to allow their system to check in periodically for updates while they are away from Rutgers.
