Can I use SSL on a web page that is a virtual host on RCI?

| |

No, SSL will not work on a web page that is a virtual host. The reason for this has to do with the very nature of what a virtual host is. A virtual host allows a department that has a departmental account (also known as a become account) to have a web page address that is something other then http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~become_account_name.

For example a department with a become account called help, has a web page called http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~help. This department can request that a virtual host be set up for them that gives them the web page address http://helpdesk.rutgers.edu. However because SSL on RCI only works with pages that start with http://www.rci.rutgers.edu SSL will not work.

Why do I get an error message when I try to use SSL on a web site that is a virtual host on RCI?

| |

SSL on RCI will only work from pages that start with http://www.rci.rutgers.edu. Because web pages that are on a virtual host have the address http://virtualhostname.rutgers.edu SSL will not work. To fix this problem make sure that links to forms that use SSL are given in the following manner: http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~becomeaccount/form.html.
