How do I find out what version of the Linux kernel is running on my machine?

| |

In Linux there is a command called kernelversion that can be run to find out what version of the Linux kernel is running. Users may need to supply the full path to this command to get it to run properly. Usually the full path is:

/sbin/kernelversion

If the full path to the kernelversion command is not known, the user can use:

locate kernelversion
or

whereis kernelversion
to find it.
